Colorado State University Pueblo employees from the Administrative Professional Council (APC) recently adopted a portion of highway in Pueblo to maintain as part of the Spruce Up Colorado program.
On Saturday, July 18 eight employees of CSU Pueblo APC group cleaned up the area of Santa Fe Dr. to the intersection of Northern Ave. for a two mile stretch of Highway 50C, mile posts 2-4.
Although groups split up to clean up, the area required more effort so the group will reconvene for another clean up on Saturday, July 25. Many CSU Pueblo employees shared excitement to be part of the community service opportunity.
“First off it’s good for our community, that’s a big reason why I did it.”Emma Mitchell, Independent Studies Program Coordinator at CSU Pueblo.
The APC group pursued the opportunity of Spruce Up Colorado to bring groups across the CSU Pueblo campus together and for the benefit of the Pueblo community. The project has been in the works for over a year with the Colorado Department of Transportation once the program was approved by the APC group last fall.
“Volunteering has always been important to me. Since I came to CSU Pueblo six years ago, Adopting a Highway has been a project I’ve always wanted to take on. Now that I’ve been part of APC’s leadership this past year, it seemed like a great opportunity to find a way for folks from our campus to get together and do something good for our community and the environment.”Kathryn Starkey, Adult Learning/PLA Lead Specialist in the Division of Extended Studies at CSU Pueblo and secretary of APC
Despite the coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic, six different departments from across campus were represented during the first clean up date. The Spruce Up Colorado program schedules four clean up dates to take place per year over a span of two years.
“Now with the challenges we’ve been experiencing with COVID-19, we’re glad that we can have the chance to see some of our colleagues at a distance while still having a chance to serve our community,” said Starkey.
