Whistle While They Work: CSU-Pueblo Student Officials

Sports Officials for Thunderwolf Recreation: CJ Mast (A18), Eisley Black, Zeke Torrez, Caden Parker, and Nathan Hancock.

As the semester begins, many students on campus are seeking an opportunity to find employment. A select few are offered the opportunity to become an intramural sports official for ThunderWolf Recreation. Between Flag Football, Volleyball, Soccer, Softball and Basketball, these officials keep the game fair, safe and fun.

The passion for officiating is like a fire; a small spark can grow into a large flame in short order. Several students have gone above and beyond to become Colorado High School Activities Association certified as high school officials. These officials are working every level from bantam (3-5th grade) to high stakes varsity contests.

Nationwide, youth sport officials are declining in alarming numbers. Many associations are feeling the pain, sometimes having to cancel games due to the lack of availability of officials. These amazing students are helping with this challenge.

“Officiating high school sports has given me an opportunity to take the things I learned while working for ThunderWolf Recreation and apply them in real world situations. I really enjoy the intensity and the camaraderie of being part of the Pueblo Sports Officials Association. In addition, I can earn more money, so that’s a plus!”
